Conventional Munitions Demilitarization

Mission

Achieve safe, economical and environmentally responsible demilitarization of the Nation’s stockpile of obsolete and non-serviceable munitions.
We achieve this mission by:

  • Performing end of life cycle demilitarization for all Department of Defense conventional munitions and missiles as the Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition
  • Achieving safe, economical and environmentally responsible demilitarization of the Nation’s stockpile of obsolete and non-serviceable munitions
  • Supporting DOD mission readiness through freeing up munition storage capacity
  • Accomplish munition demilitarization at organic and commercial facilities through closed disposal technologies and open burn/open detonation operations
 Capabilities
  • Demilitarization, recycle and disposal of conventional munitions, energetics, explosives and missiles
  • Provide subject matter expertise to munition developers on design for demilitarization and developing disposal plans for new munitions
  • Provide guidance and expertise to allied and partner nations on thermal treatment technologies and disposal of FMS supplied munitions
  • Supply recycled components for new ammunition production
  • Generate resources through Recovery and Recycling programs (approximately $6M/year)
  • Remove outdated and unsafe munition stockpile to reduce logistics burden in storage
  • Provide valuable space and volume in earth-cover magazine for new munition storage
